Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and unfavourable lifestyle habits. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity. In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, natural therapies including botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, naturopathic manipulation and traditional Chinese medicine/acupuncture, may also be used during treatments.

Who is it for?

What you need to know.

Patients who suffer from acute or chronic pain such as arthritis in the knees, repetitive sprains, shoulder tears, elbow or wrist pain could consider Prolotherapy to improve their condition. Chronic headaches, migraines or TMJ issues have also been shown to respond well to Prolotherapy. If you think that surgery is the only remaining option to relieve pain, Prolotherapy could offer a much less invasive treatment worth trying.

What is Prolotherapy?

Our approach

The word "Prolotherapy" is derived from the Latin word "Proli" which means to regenerate or rebuild. Sometimes also called Non-Surgical Ligament, Tendon or Joint Reconstruction Therapy, the treatment involves a very directed injection to an injury site. The injection tricks the body to repair by creating a mild inflammatory response encouraging growth of new ligament or tendon fibers and restoring the original strength to the area.

How is it different?

How this service can help you

Damaged joints rapidly become weak and without intervention do not repair back to their original strength or endurance. Prolotherapy works by stimulating the body to use its own natural healing mechanisms to repair injured joints and painful areas. First discovered in the 1930's by Dr Earl Gedney, an osteopathic surgeon based in Philadelphia, ongoing research has shown over 85% effectiveness of Prolotherapy for arthritis or lower back pain compared to 52% effectiveness from back surgery.

The injection consists of dextrose (a type of sugar solution and a harmless substance at such low doses), which initiates a temporary low-grade inflammation and healing response. This leads to increased circulation and a rise in oxygen levels and nutrients resulting in local cellular regeneration. Unlike other types of joint injections such as corticosteroids, pain killers, or hyaluronic acids, which provide short term pain relief, Prolotherapy works to strengthen joints, providing long term improvements.
