What Is Facial Acupuncture?
Facial acupuncture, also called facial rejuvenation acupuncture, is a specialized application of traditional acupuncture that targets both the face and the whole body. Fine needles are placed at specific points on the face, neck, and body to improve circulation, stimulate collagen production, and support the health of the skin and underlying facial muscles.
Unlike topical treatments that work on the surface, facial acupuncture works from within, addressing the physiological factors that affect how skin looks and feels. It draws on centuries of acupuncture practice and applies them to aesthetic and functional concerns including:
- Fine lines, skin laxity, and uneven skin tone
- Puffiness, poor circulation, and dull complexion
- TMJ pain, jaw tension, and facial muscle tightness
How We Approach Facial Acupuncture at Pro Health
Facial acupuncture at Pro Health is delivered by Dr. Ann Colaco DTCM, RMT, and Dr. Kyley Hunt ND. Dr. Colaco holds a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Canadian Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (with honours) and brings 8 years of prior experience as a Registered Massage Therapist. Her techniques include cosmetic acupuncture, motor point needling, gua sha, and electro-acupuncture. Dr. Hunt is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor trained in Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture, with additional expertise in IV therapies, women's health, and integrative skin care.
Each treatment begins with a full-body acupuncture assessment, not just the face. Points are selected based on your individual constitution, skin concerns, and goals. Intradermal needles stimulate collagen at targeted areas, while body points address the underlying patterns contributing to skin and tissue health. Treatments conclude with a facial massage using specially selected essential oils to support circulation and relaxation.

What Facial Acupuncture Can Help You Achieve
Patients who complete a course of facial acupuncture at Pro Health commonly report:
- Improved skin tone, texture, and elasticity, including a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and increased firmness in areas of laxity
- Reduced puffiness and improved circulation, with a brighter and more even complexion that develops over the course of a treatment series
- Relief from TMJ discomfort and jaw tension, particularly when combined with body acupuncture addressing the underlying muscular and nervous system patterns
Results develop gradually over a series of treatments. Your practitioner will give you a realistic sense of the timeline based on your skin concerns and constitution at your first appointment.
Acupuncture
Coming from a tradition that dates back over 2,000 years, Acupuncture is by far the oldest treatment offered at our clinic. Acupuncture involves using fine, sterile needles to penetrate the surface of the skin in order to affect the flow of energy and encourage a healing response for pain and a broad range of conditions. Unlike many other treatments on offer at our clinic, acupuncture does not involve any manipulation of muscles or joints. Highly trained therapists, specializing in this technique, insert needles at specific points either around the painful area or at other locations on the body. Each needle performs a role in the overall treatment, there are hundreds of recognized places to insert needles around the body, each patient’s treatment is totally unique.

Frequently Asked Questions about Facial Acupuncture
Yes, the terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to the use of acupuncture techniques applied to the face and neck, combined with full-body treatment points, to support skin health and address aesthetic concerns. At Pro Health, both Dr. Colaco and Dr. Hunt are trained in this approach.
Most patients find facial acupuncture comfortable. The needles used on the face are very fine, and any sensation is typically mild. Some patients notice a brief tingling or warmth at the needle site. Your practitioner will adjust placement based on your comfort throughout the session.
Most patients see meaningful results over a series of 6 to 10 sessions, typically scheduled weekly or biweekly. Maintenance treatments every four to six weeks are recommended afterward to sustain results. Your practitioner will give you a more specific recommendation at your first appointment.
Facial acupuncture is a non-injectable, drug-free approach that works by improving circulation and stimulating the body's own collagen production. Results develop more gradually than injectable treatments but involve no recovery time, no foreign substances, and carry a different risk profile. It is a complementary option, not a direct substitute, and suits patients looking for a natural approach to skin health.
Coverage depends on your extended health benefit plan. Treatments delivered by Dr. Colaco (DTCM) may be claimable under acupuncture benefits, and treatments by Dr. Hunt (ND) under naturopathic benefits. We recommend confirming with your insurance provider before your first appointment. Call us at (403) 547-9011 for more information.
