What is Vestibular Physiotherapy?

This discipline focuses on the precise assessment and treatment of dizziness and balance disorders. These problems often arise from disruptions in the vestibular system: the part of your inner ear and brain that controls your sense of balance and spatial orientation. Disruptions can be caused by inner ear conditions, head injuries, infections, certain medications, or age-related changes.

Patients may experience symptoms including dizziness, vertigo, headaches, nausea, and visual disturbances. Vestibular rehabilitation physiotherapy uses targeted, evidence-based exercises to help your brain and vestibular system re-sync — reducing symptoms and restoring your confidence in movement.

Mihai uses infrared goggles to closely observe your eye movements during assessment. This helps accurately pinpoint the root cause of your dizziness and enables a personalized treatment plan built around your specific presentation.

Who is it for?

Vestibular physiotherapy is for anyone struggling with dizziness, vertigo, or balance problems that disrupt their daily life. At Pro Health Chiropractic & Physiotherapy in Nolan Hill, NW Calgary, vestibular physiotherapy is led by Mihai Prajea, MScPT, one of the few physiotherapists in Calgary with both introductory and advanced vestibular certification through the Dizziness and Balance Rehabilitation Clinic.

It's effective for conditions including:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis
  • Cervicogenic vertigo
  • Meniere's disease
  • Vestibular migraines
  • Post-concussion syndrome
  • Chronic dizziness or unexplained balance problems
  • Age-related balance decline and fall prevention

If you've been told your symptoms are "just anxiety" or haven't gotten a clear explanation for what you're experiencing, vestibular physiotherapy assessment is often the missing step.

Vestibular Physiotherapy FAQ

Vestibular physiotherapy can help with a variety of balance and dizziness-related conditions, including:
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Dizziness or vertigo
  • Vestibular neuritis
  • Meniere's disease
  • Chronic dizziness
  • Balance problems

Your first appointment runs 60 minutes. Mihai will take a thorough history, then assess your eye movements, head and neck mobility, and balance to identify what's driving your symptoms. Based on the assessment, he'll guide you through specific exercises — which might include gaze stabilization, balance retraining, habituation exercises, or repositioning maneuvers for BPPV. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. You may be asked to perform balance exercises, so avoid wearing skirts, dresses, or tight clothing. Non-slip shoes or socks are also recommended.

The initial vestibular physiotherapy appointment usually lasts 60 minutes, where the therapist will assess your condition and start treatment. Follow-up appointments are 30 minutes long.
